The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest-ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

In 2022, our funding enabled Stratford-upon-Avon Friends of the Earth to invite the keynote speaker Mark Cocker, a multi-award-winning author and naturalist who is well-known to ornithologists and readers of his 'Country Diary' column, to give a talk as part of their programme of events.

His talk at the Crowne Plaza was called 'Saving the Planet One Thought at a Time'. The talk was well received and one of its themes was the interconnectedness of all life, threats to nature in the twenty-first century and the vital importance of protecting our environment. One member of the audience commented: “Mark has the ability to communicate ideas about the environment clearly and with passion. Thanks very much for putting on this talk” (26th September 2022).

Janet Palmer from Stratford-upon-Avon Friends of the Earth said: "Since Mark’s talk last year, a thriving network has grown up around the theme of his new book, 'Swifts and the Story of Life on Earth.'  Stratford Swifts, Shipston Action for Swifts, Preston-on-Stour Environment Group, Escape Arts and Stratford Climate Action have all worked together to put on new events for Great Big Green Week 2023.

"This year, Mark Cocker is accompanied by another nature writer – Charles Foster- and the two artists who illustrated their books, Alison Ingram and Jonathan Pomroy. There is to be a whole weekend of swift-related activity in Stratford on 17th and 18th June 2023, including an evening talk, free family craft activities, painting demonstrations, Bird Walks, and most importantly, increased determination as we expand our network in the interests of protecting nature."
